New Subject Mapping: IGCSE Language A – First Language (A*-G)
We've added a new subject mapping to Alps Connect: IGCSE Language A – First Language (A-G). This subject is designed for students who take a Cambridge International IGCSE in their own first (home) language, rather than as a foreign or second language.
A number of Cambridge International IGCSE First Language qualifications are offered across different languages. Rather than leaving these qualifications unmapped, we've grouped them under a single umbrella subject, so that schools entering students for any of these courses can now map them.
For example, the following Cambridge International IGCSE qualifications should be mapped under IGCSE Language A – First Language (A*-G):
- Arabic – First Language (A*-G)
- Chinese – First Language (A*-G)
- French – First Language (A*-G)
- German – First Language (A*-G)
- Italian – First Language (A*-G)
- Malay – First Language (A*-G)
- Portuguese – First Language (A*-G)
- Spanish – First Language (A*-G)
Why we chose the name "Language A"
The name deliberately draws a parallel with IB Language A subjects, which are the language qualifications students take in their home or first language as part of the IB Diploma. Using the same "Language A" terminology makes it immediately recognisable to schools and staff already familiar with the IB structure, and clearly distinguishes these first-language courses from IGCSEs taken as a foreign or second language.
