Ascent Subject Analysis
Overview
The Subjects zone gives you a subject-by-subject view of performance, letting you see how each subject is doing right now and how it's tracked over time. It's made up of two views — Subject Analysis and Gradepoint Analysis — accessed via the tabs at the top of the page.
As with the Dashboard, the Academic Year and Year Group filters at the top right apply across both views, so make sure these are set to the cohort you want to look at before reviewing the data.
Subject Analysis
Subject Analysis gives you a single snapshot of every subject for the selected year group, based on the most recent gradepoint. Each row in the table represents one subject, with the following columns:
- Entries – the number of student grades recorded for that subject
- Grade Bands - tumber of students currently sitting in each of your grade bands e.g. Emerging / Developing / Enabling / Accelerating or Below/On/Above
- Avg. Start Band – the average starting band for students in that subject
- Avg. Grade – the average current grade, shown as a coloured badge (colour reflects performance against target)
- Avg. Score – the average score relative to target, where a positive number means the subject is outperforming target on average and a negative number means it's underperforming
Scanning down the Avg. Score column will immediately show you which subjects are strongest and which need attention for the year group you've selected.
A Filters button above the table lets you refine the view further — with filters for Tutor Group, Avg. Grade, Disadvantaged, SEND, EAL and Gender.
Gradepoint Analysis
Gradepoint Analysis takes the same subject list but lets you track how each subject has changed over time, by comparing results across multiple gradepoints side by side. You can compare up to 4 gradepoints at once, with each one shown as its own column group across the table.
For each subject and each gradepoint, you'll see:
- Entries – the number of grades recorded at that gradepoint
- Avg. Grade – the average grade at that point in time, shown as a coloured badge
- Above / On / Below – the percentage of students who were above, on, or below target at that gradepoint
Because the same subjects run across every gradepoint column, this view makes it easy to read along a row and see the trend for a subject — for example, whether the percentage of students below target is falling as the year progresses, or whether a subject's average grade has moved up a band between two data collections.
Individual Subject Pages
Clicking on any subject name in either Subject Analysis or Gradepoint Analysis takes you through to that subject's own overview page — for example, clicking "French" opens the French page for the year group you've selected. The Academic Year and Year Group filters carry across, so you land on the same cohort you were just looking at.
The individual subject page has three parts:
Subject Overview shows the key figures for that subject and year group at a glance: the subject name, number of students, average grade (as a coloured badge), and average score.
Score Trend plots the average score for the subject over each gradepoint in the year, shown as a solid line, against a dotted Cohort Average line for comparison. This makes it easy to see whether the subject is tracking above or below the whole-cohort average, and whether the gap is widening or closing over time.
Student Grades lists every student taking that subject, with:
- Start Band – the band they started the year in
- One column per gradepoint, showing their grade at that point (as a coloured badge)
- Score – their current score relative to target
- Trend – a small sparkline showing the shape of their progress across gradepoints
A Filters button sits above the Student Grades table so you can narrow the list down by comparison demographics and clicking a Student ID or name will take you through to that student's own profile.
