Alps analysis of 2023 client benchmarks - GCSE England SEPTEMBER 2023

Information will appear here in the week following KS4 Results Day

2023 GCSE Results in England

Following the release of this years GCSE examination results we have analysed the data released by  the Joint Council of Qualifications and Ofqual alongside the data uploaded to Alps by our schools to help provide you with the key information that we think will be useful at this stage.

What do we know so far?

As expected the overall GCSE results for students in England has returned to a profile that is broadly in line with those results achieved in 2019.

At a subject level results follow a similar pattern with outcomes returning towards those awarded in 2019. Analysis of grade 9 below indicates that for some subject e.g. Music and Economics this meant there was a substantive drop compared to 2022. It is also worth noting that outcomes in some subjects in 2023 are much closer to those awarded in 2019 compared to others e.g. Biology and History. Languages have seen less of a drop reflecting adjustments required of examination boards.

And at 9-5

KS4 Client Benchmarks

In this section we present our findings on the client benchmarks.

The first thing to note is that the client benchmarks at KS4 represent a subsection of the national dataset, approximately 10%. With this in mind, it is important to set out the contextual information about this subset of schools and colleges.

Average KS2 scores as the prior attainment baseline.
In the table below we set out the average KS2 scores for the DfE and for the Alps client data for cohorts completing their KS4 courses in 2022 and 2023.

In both cohorts, it is important to point out that the Alps subset of schools have a slightly higher average KS2 score than the national. If we look at the cohort distribution profile in a little more detail we can see that there are more students in the top few Alps prior attainment bands than in the national.

And finally, there are a higher proportion of schools in the Alps datasets with positive Progress 8 scores.

In summary, the schools and colleges in the Alps dataset represent perhaps a slightly higher performing group of providers. This should be taken into account when assessing progress against the Alps client benchmarks which are set out below.

Alps client Progress 8
The graph below compares the Alps Client 2023 AT8 values with the DfE 2022 AT8 values. We would expect the 2023 line to be below that of the 2022 AT8.

All Progress 8 calculations for the 2023 examination gradepoint use the Alps client AT8 table. This will be replaced on publication of the DfE 2023 AT8 tables in October 2023.
All monitoring gradepoints for 2023.24 will again use the 2023 Alps client AT8 value until publication of DfE AT8.

MEPs

When we compare the 2023 Alps client benchmark to the 2019 national benchmarks, there is little shift across the prior attainment bands in terms of Minimum Expected Points.

If we look at the effect of switching to the client benchmark, we see that on average schools drop by -0.83 in terms of QI grade. There is a downwards movement generally. Again please note that this is a subset of the national data that we are comparing.

We will replace the Alps client benchmark with the 2023 DfE national data when it is released, usually in the Spring Term. We would then use this benchmark as the default for monitoring cohorts across 2023.24 onwards.
